Alpine trail running
at the Wilder Kaiser
The “Wilder Kaiser” around Ellmau promises excellent conditions for all trail lovers. From “leisurely” laps in the valley to challenging alpine routes for experienced runners – every runner will find something to suit their training needs here. There are lots of different routes that can also be combined with each other. Choose for yourself whether you want to count the altitude meters or the kilometers in an alpine setting.
The right equipment
Trail running shoes with good tread are essential. Depending on the length and difficulty of the tour, a small backpack with a water bladder, food, windbreaker/rain gear, and a small first aid kit are also important. A cell phone is mandatory.
Weather & conditions: The weather in the mountains can change quickly. Always check the current weather conditions in advance and adjust your route planning accordingly. Caution in wet conditions: The trails can become very slippery.
GPS & Maps
Download GPX tracks to your GPS watch or smartphone. Ideally, always take a hiking map with you. The signage is good, but in unfamiliar terrain, additional navigation can be invaluable.
Acclimatization
Those coming from lower-lying regions should give their bodies time to adjust. Starting with easier tours is definitely a good idea.
Hydration & Food
Plan sufficient breaks for drinking and eating, especially on longer tours. Many huts along the trails offer the opportunity to stop for refreshments and refill water bottles.
Wilder Kaiser GuestCard
Take advantage of the Guest Card benefits for using the mountain railways (to the starting point) and the KaiserJet (hiking buses). This makes it easier to organize cool tours.
Mountain schools/Running clubs
Booking guided trail running tours or courses at a local mountain school is a great idea for beginners. Weekly running groups are also offered in the Wilder Kaiser region. Just ask for more info
Conclusion
The Wilder Kaiser is a paradise for trail runners. Choose the route that suits you, your ability, and your day plan. Keep your eyes open—the scenery is breathtaking.
